Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has made it clear that anything less than qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will mark the end of his tenure. Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Broos didn’t hold back, stating that he would resign immediately if his team fails to deliver in their upcoming matches against Uganda and South Sudan.  

“It would be a little shame if we don’t qualify for AFCON,” Broos said, emphasizing the unacceptable nature of such a failure. “We are bronze medalists. Can you imagine that the bronze medal of nine months ago can’t even qualify for the next AFCON?”  

Bafana Bafana’s path to qualification involves two crucial matches. The first, a challenging away fixture against Uganda, is expected to test the team’s resilience. The second, a home match against South Sudan, is seen as a must-win. Despite the difficulties, Broos remains confident in his squad but has left no room for complacency.  

“If we’d lose both games, five minutes after the game I’m on the flight to Belgium. You can be sure of it,” he said. “If we can’t win... against South Sudan at home, I’ll immediately take a flight, and you’ll never see me again.”  

The coach’s ultimatum adds immense pressure to the team, but it also demonstrates his high expectations and belief in their abilities. Broos has overseen a period of progress for Bafana Bafana, with the team earning a bronze medal earlier this year. In his post-match comments, Mngqithi expressed admiration for Chiefs’ young stars but warned of the dangers of over-relying on them. He noted that while the likes of Mdu Shabalala, Wandile Duba, and Mfundo Vilakazi are undeniably talented, it’s crucial not to make them carry the team’s heavy expectations. “As much as they are good, they shouldn’t be carrying the team,” Mngqithi said.
